Accessing The South Australian Genealogy
& Heraldry Society
The
South Australian Genealogy & Heraldry Society Inc was formed
in 1973 to promote and encourage the pursuit of family history
and allied subjects in South Australia. The society has
no political or religious affiliations. It is affiliated
with the Australasian Federation of Family History Organisations
(AFFHO), the English based Federation of Family History
Societies (FFHS) and the Scottish Association of Family
History Societies (SAFHS).
The society's membership of over 2,800 makes it the largest
family history society in South Australia and it is located
in the former Unley Institute at 201 Unley Road, Unley.
The Society maintains a web
site that outlines its services and addresses some of
the needs of its remote members and the public who cannot
attend in person.
Non-members can visit the library for a daily fee and the
Society will undertake research within the Society's library
for persons living outside the Adelaide metropolitan area
or remote members.
The collection has a strong representation of English, Scottish
and Irish material and specifically features:
South Australian material including: birth, death
& marriage indexes; district birth, death & marriage
records; cemetery indexes; burial registers; Church records;
school admission registers; probate indexes; shipping records;
family and district histories, electoral rolls.
Material for other Australian states and territories including:
birth, death & marriage indexes; probate Indexes for
NSW & VIC; shipping records (mainly NSW, VIC, WA); cemetery
records (mainly NSW, QLD, VIC, TAS, WA);some electoral rolls
(1993, 1996, 1999); : genealogical society journals.
New Zealand: birth, death & marriage indexes; cemetery
records.
United Kingdom: GRO Indexes for England & Wales 1837-1990:
Scottish Old Parochial Records Index (pre 1855); 1851 1881
1891 Scottish censuses; growing census coverage of indexes/transcriptions
for England and Wales; 1881 England & Wales census;
probate indexes for England & Wales 1853-1943; genealogy
society journals.
Visitors can also access a large collection of data CDs [220+] and browse the Internet for no charge.
