District Registrars of Births, Deaths & Marriages in South Australia

The offices of District Registrars, who kept a duplicate copies of the BDM certificates, were discontinued in 1991.

• Selected district registers are now in the custody of libraries in the areas where they were generated.

The registers or microfiche are accessible to the public for research purposes, subject to conditions including a ban on photocopying of the entries.
• Many remain unindexed.
• A full set in microfiche can be found at the SA Genealogy & Heraldry Society Library.
• Due to privacy considerations only the following district registers are available:

1. Birth registrations from commencement of the particular district's records to 1928
2. Marriage registrations from commencement of the particular district's records to 1937
3. Death registrations from commencement of the particular district's records to 1970

Following is a schedule to help locate appropriate district registers. Only the bold entries (ie the 22 Districts as at 1991) are available. However, all districts are shown to assist the researcher in locating earlier records. Thus if you seek a record created in Morphett Vale you need to look in Adelaide prior to 1856 and Willunga.

NOTE: Libraries operate on varying hours and access to registers may be restricted. Telephone before calling. Library staff will not undertake research. You will need to visit yourself or send an agent.
